Thanks so much for visiting 6A On-Line. The class website is an exciting educational initiative which I feel will be beneficial for both students and parents. So, let me introduce myself. My name is Geoff Richardson, and this is my ninth year at Grand Avenue State School. I've been teaching for twenty years at schools in the Lockyer Valley, Tieri, Inala and Pallara. My journey started as a P.E. Teacher in the Lockyer Valley for a year, and then I quickly moved into the classroom at my base school, Glenore Grove State School, met my future wife, and the rest, as they say, is history.
As a teacher, I've had so many exciting adventures along the way and so many great memories. At each school, I've valued the relationships I've had with teachers and students and learnt a lot during this journey. My move to Grand Avenue State School was tremendously exciting for me, and I love being a year 6 teacher at such a great school.
To me, the best part of being a primary school teacher is the variety. One minute, I'm a Science teacher, the next a Maths teacher. Then I'm teaching English, and I even get to teach sport, as well. In high school, I had a dream to become a sports journalist, and then I decided to be a P.E. teacher. Along the way, I worked as a outdoor educator, taking groups abseiling, canoeing and hiking, as a scientist working in a laboratory at UQ and even as a removalist. I finally found my calling as a primary school teacher, and I wouldn't have it any other way.
I'm really lucky at Grand Avenue because I not only have the best class in the school (6Awesome), but I have quite a few roles that I value. With Mrs Caroline Burke, I am the year 6 year level co-ordinator in 2017. I'm involved with Games Rangers, Student Council, the Maths Team Challenge, The Number Shoot Out, Maths tutoring, the STEM Challenge project and Interschool Sport. It's busy, but I like it that way!
Let's backtrack a little. I attended Moorooka State Primary School and then Yeronga High School. After high school, I completed a Bachelor of Science at the University of Queensland, majoring in Microbiology and Biochemistry. I then completed a Graduate Diploma of Primary Education at Griffith University and also a Graduate Diploma in Outdoor Education.
On a personal level, I was born in Penrith in New South Wales in 1971. My family moved to Brisbane when I was five, so I very much see myself as a Queenslander, particularly at State of Origin time. I'm married to my lovely wife, Tania and have a beautiful daughter named Lauren. We have a feisty kelpie cross called Lucky who keeps us busy and three ravenous guinea pigs. I am one of three brothers and have two amazing parents. Next year, my father, two brothers and I will take on the challenge of completing the Kokoda Trail in Papua New Guinea. I quite often use Kurt Fearnley, the great Australian Paralympian as an inspiration to the students of resilience and courage. He crawled the Kokoda Track in an incredible eleven days, wearing out five sets of gloves in the process. Incredible!! It will be tough, but I'm very much looking forward to this challenge. Later this year, I'm also looking forward to the annual year 6 Canberra Tour. It's an absolutely fabulous week; tiring, but very rewarding.
